Depression (Major Depressive  Disorder)

- A qualified mental health care professional must  fully assess individual before giving someone a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder.
WHY?  It is more than just the” blues”. It is a serious medical condition that can interfere with your ability to function.  Also, a comprehensive assessment is needed because people may experience the same symptoms due to a general medical condition, substance use or bereavement.
Major depression is when a person has five or more symptoms of depression for at least 2 weeks. These symptoms must represent a change from previous functioning and one of these symptoms  must be  either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure. Other symptoms may be significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain, changes  in sleeping patterns,  agitation, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, inappropriate guilt, loss of energy, diminished ability to think or concentrate, thoughts of death or suicide or specific plan to harm oneself.

If you are suicidal or have thoughts of harming someone else, please do not wait for a counselor to return your call- Call 911 or Go immediately to your nearest emergency room.

National Suicidal Hotline:

Anxiety -

Some symptoms of anxiety are excessive worry, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbance. The mental health professional must make sure it is not Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, PTSD, Adjustment Disorders,  general medical conditions  (i.e.: hyperthyroidism) or  anxiety that has been substance induced. A licensed clinician must fully assess individual before giving diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Reaction to a major loss. People may experience depressed mood, crying, anger, denial, shock and/or guilt. Many people who have suffered loss  need to process the things they wish had ended differently, better or more.

Substance Use/Alcoholism-

Full substance use assessments are administered to determine whether a person is abusing drugs or have become dependent on substances. Dependency is characterized by withdrawal symptoms ,and/or increased tolerance, continued use despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have caused or exacerbated by the substance, unsuccessful attempts to cut down.  Proper “ level of care” recommendations are given. Early warning signs, identifying high risk situations and  relapse prevention skills are taught by certified addictions professional here at the Cove.

Co - Dependency-

Some signs that you may be co dependent are: You are a rescuer, you will do anything to hold onto a relationship, you have an excessive need for approval, keep quiet to avoid arguments, have trouble telling people no, hard to be yourself, take on a martyr’s role.

Domestic Violence-

“It's about power and control” over another individual.  It is not only black eyes (physical abuse) but can include psychological, emotional , sexual and economic  abuse. We  use the LUV technique here. L- Listen   U- understanding    V- validate your feelings.
We will never judge you or force you to leave the relationship but we will express concern for your safety, provide a safety plan and  offer alternatives.
If you are the perpetrator of the violence, we can recommend batterer intervention programs that are certified through the Department of Children and Families.

Stress Management -

A holistic paradigm is used to address stress. Progressive muscle relaxation techniques, deep breathing exercises, proper nutrition, exercise, time management and self talk are taught.
